Blanca Wetlands in the San Luis Valley.

Blanca Wetlands in the San Luis Valley, Colorado has been identified as a nationally significant shorebird site for a number of species, as a key Research Site by the Intermountain West Joint Venture Shorebird Science Team, as an Important Bird Area in Colorado, and is located within one of three priority America’s Great Outdoors (AGO) areas identified by former Secretary of the Interior Salazar.

Celebrate Shorebird Interns will work carefully under the guide of BLM management to conduct shorebird surveys and duck banding across the multiple playas found in the Wetlands. Over the past 10 years, BLM biologists have initiated baseline data collection at Blanca Wetlands that address species composition and abundance for the dozens of shorebird species that depend on the site.
