Meet our new Intern, Cara!

Mountaineer Cara

Name: Cara Ascarrunz
College: Truman State University
Major: Biology, minor in Spanish
Project Site: Boulder Headquarters

Background:

¡Hola! My name is Cara Ascarrunz and I am the new Communications and Latino Engagement intern for Environment for the Americas. I just graduated with a B.A. in Biology from Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri. I completed my Spanish minor abroad in Costa Rica, and it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience to see some of the biological reserves and areas and am eager to gain experience with how I can make a difference in the world involving biology, outreach, and conservation issues.

As a child, I grew up in Utah, Louisiana, and Mississippi. My passion for the outdoors began early, and my siblings, cousins, and I explored the natural beauty of Louisiana’s semi-tropical backyard we called home. My first experiences with birding involved a Junior membership to the Audubon Society, a bird guide book, and a pair of binoculars I used to watch the common birds in Louisiana. I am very excited to be involved with Environment for the Americas to promote conservation awareness and outreach about migratory birds with both the English and Spanish speaking communities. The idea that we have something as amazing as international bird migration to unite different cultures and countries is one I find beautiful.

I am really excited to be a part of Environment for the Americas and look forward to learning all that I can about birds and conservation efforts. I’ve already enjoyed getting to know the past EFTA intern-Michelle Mendieta and she has given me a lot of support and info to start my new position here!

Interests: My other interests include all things involving biology and nature and when I can, photographing those moments! I also enjoy hiking, camping, tennis, music, and singing.

Long-term Goals: My long-term goal is work abroad in a Spanish-speaking country with an organization involving biology/conservation issues. Eventually, I want to continue my education with a Masters/Ph.D program and overall just live a satisfying life!
